The right choice of BMX race wheels can make the difference between winning or losing

Ask any race BMX rider how important a good start is, and they’ll probably tell you, that the Snap, as it’s called, is the difference between winning or losing a BMX race. Because accelerating out of the start gates is important in Race BMX, many BMX riders tend to choose a light and aerodynamic BMX race wheel to get the maximal out of every pedal stroke.

To shave an extra precious gram of their bike, race BMX riders tend to use rims with fewer spokes. This is at the expense of strength, and narrower rims, so you need to be aware that Race BMX wheels won’t take the same abuse as freestyle and jump wheels will.

So what size of Race BMX bike wheels should I choose?

Even though BMX wheels are produced from 12”-20” the most common size for race BMX wheels are 20”. The sizes 12”-18” are mainly produced for children and young teenagers.

Notice: It is important when changing the wheel hub that the spoke hole count is the same as on the rim - 36 and 48 holes cannot be mixed.

It’s important to note that the skinnier BMX tire and rim sizes (20 x 1 1/8-3/8 and 24 x 1 1/8-3/8) are not interchangeable with each other or with the 20 x 1.5 or 1.75 tire and rims.

Prolong the life of your tubes.

By using a piece of rim tape for your Race BMX wheels you can protect your tubes against the sharp edges of the spoke holes. By using this cheap “piece” of rubber band, you’ll reduce the risk of getting a flat tire.
